Special American Red Wolf Adoption Package
Proceeds from this special adoption package will support the North Carolina Zoo's ongoing efforts to save the American Red Wolf from extinction and help restore it to part of its former home in North Carolina.
The American Red Wolf is the world's rarest dog species and its only wild population lives in a five-county area on North Carolina's Albemarle Sound. This wild population currently consists of fewer than 30 individuals, all of whom descended from the last known group of these animals—only 14 had survived. Thanks to the US Fish & Wildlife Service and what has grown to be 50 American zoological institutions, the wolf's population has grown to nearly 300 animals. Our goals are continue to bred and increase the wolf's total population and establish a viable population of wolves in the wild's of North Carolina. After that, we hope to establish a second wild population.
